Mentoring

Achieve your learning and development career aspirations and goals

Everyone has the ability to grow, learn and develop at work and at home. We have ideas, aspirations and goals, but it can be difficult to work out how to make them a reality by ourselves. We're all on our own journey and what works for someone else may not be helpful for you.

Sometimes we benefit from a helping hand or a different perspective. Research shows that 96% of mentees find mentoring useful and 89% report improvements in their quality of life.

A trusted advisor

A mentor is a trusted advisor who helps people grow and develop in their career.

I work with people who want to develop their learning and development skills, transition to a new role, experiment with different ways of working, or explore their options within the big and exciting world of learning and development.

Here are some things you may be thinking about:

  • I'm ready for a change. What's next in my learning and development career?
  • How can I transition into a new role or take on more responsibility at work?
  • How can I improve my learning and development practice?
  • How do I try or experiment with new ways of working?
  • I have set myself an ambitious goal. How can I work towards achieving it?

I can help

I have mentored emerging learning and development professionals throughout my entire career. I have been a mentor for the Australia and New Zealand mentoring programme for learning and development professionals since 2023.

How does mentoring work?

As a mentor, I listen, ask prompting questions, help you reflect on your practice, share my experience and support you to plan and work towards achieving your career goals. We'll meet regularly to check on progress, plan next steps and celebrate your achievements.

I'll be your biggest career cheerleader!

What my mentees say

I found myself at yet another crossroads. Middle-aged, teenage kids, tons of qualifications and experience ... the comfortable option would have been to roll over and accept my lot in life. And yet, unfulfilled ambition nagged.

I had to do something different, so I joined the AITD and went looking for someone whose experience could inform mine. I found Angela, whose profile offered to assist those exploring pathways in L&D. Educated, experienced, informed and full of stories, Angela has given me confidence to keep to the hard path and stick out the journey.

Cheers, mate. One of the warmest experiences of my professional life.

James Aitken, Learning Designer

I had the privilege of being mentored by Angela for about six months as I navigated my journey in the learning and design field.

During these six months, we had multiple mentoring sessions, and never once did I feel hesitant to discuss my concerns and apprehensions with her.

Angela not only helped me with the technical aspects of the field but also provided me with invaluable career advice that helped me gain clarity. For instance, her guidance on refining my networking skills led me to securing a crucial project. Her expertise in conducting workshops and her facilitation skills taught me how to engage learners and craft exciting learning experiences.

By the end of our mentorship programme, I felt empowered to make informed decisions and grow as a successful learning designer. The insights and strategies she has shared will stay with me throughout my career, and I'm incredibly grateful for her willingness to invest her time and energy into helping me grow.
